Every Month I will feature some tips to help you save money while trying to update/maintain your home. After all, who doesn't like to save money?
July's Tip:
If you are looking to update your home or if you are furnishing your home a great place to start will be to BUY SECOND HAND. The best resource for second-hand wares is Habitat for Humanity. The housing nonprofit has dozens of Re-stores, which are basically thrift stores for building supplies. When people renovate, they donate their used goods to the store for a tax deduction. Habitat then sells it to you. They have everything from paint and fixtures, to windows, cabinets and furniture. Sometimes, they get large shipments of new items from retailers or manufacturers looking for a spot to unload some extras.
CRAIGSLIST is another alternative to finding cost effective furniture, fixtures and supplies. You may also strike up on some good deals at a yard sale. One man's junk may be the next man's treasure.
Freecycle.org is a GREAT resource to save you a lot of money on the home and garden odds and ends that can sometimes add up, but you have to respond to offers very quickly. You may be able to find items such as landscaping stones, silver maple saplings, seed starting kits, baby supplies, and even a full-size mattress set.
